"How to be Alone" Assignment

Watch the video “How to be alone” by Tanya Davis. Practice being alone by going out in public and doing something alone that you would usually do with someone else. Describe your experience in a written response (approximately 1 page) that details what you did, and how it felt to go through this experience alone. What emotions and thoughts did you experience? Are you likely to repeat this experience alone? How confident do you feel in being alone in other situations? You must spend time "alone" for at least 15 minutes. You CANNOT use: cellphones, books, animals, people, or computers for "company" during this exercise. Ideas: Movies Going out to eat Going out for coffee Sitting on a park bench Eating lunch by yourself at the cafeteria Please challenge yourself with this activity. As I have said MANY times, we do not truly learn and grow as a person unless we take risks and move outside our comfort zones. I too will be challenging myself with this activity; I look forward to debriefing this experience with you! Evaluation: Complete exercise and hand-out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7X7sZzSXYs

Journal: Write a one page personal reflection on this topic. Consider the following guiding questions: What are your observations about gender norms in your community? (define community in whatever way you wish: town, family, school, province, country, religion, ethnic group). Where do you see acceptance and celebrations of diversity in your community? Where do you find evidence of discrimination and heterosexism? How would you react if a close friend or family member came out? Consider how you would react in a private conversation, and how you would react when the person came out openly. Justify your response by reflecting on your values and how they would help you in this situation.
